Scientists studying the M87* supermassive black hole have discovered that its energy jets, which can extend up to 10 times the length of the Milky Way, are formed as a result of the black hole's rotation being slowed down by drag from spiraling magnetic field lines generated by accretion disks. This excess energy is released into the jets, providing an explanation for how black holes lose energy to their surroundings. The researchers mapped out the twisting of these magnetic field lines using computer models based on data from the Event Horizon Telescope.
