Rachel Aviv Reframes Motherhood Through Wide-Ranging Essays
In her new collection You Won’t Get Free of It, Rachel Aviv refuses to confine motherhood to sentimentality, instead weaving archival reporting, personal memory, and life-spanning portraits to map the complexities of mothers and daughters. The essays expand beyond single-case studies (including Linda Bishop and Alice Munro) to illuminate how trauma, identity, and care intersect, reflecting Aviv’s own experiences as a mother and a journalist. The book is published in the US by Knopf and in the UK by Fern Press on July 9.
