"Indicted Suspect in Japan's Prime Minister Attack Faces Attempted Murder Charge"
A 24-year-old man, Ryuji Kimura, has been formally indicted on charges of attempted murder and other offenses for the explosives attack on Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in April. Kimura allegedly threw a homemade pipe bomb at Kishida during a campaign event, causing minor injuries to two people. The bomb was determined to be lethal, and Kimura had purchased the explosives used in its making. Trial dates have yet to be decided. The attack follows the shooting and killing of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during an election campaign in 2021, shocking many in Japan where gun and bomb violence is rare.
