Google's March Pixel drop adds a desktop-like, multi-window mode when Pixel devices are connected to an external USB-C monitor, with mouse and keyboard support; the feature supports Pixel 8 and newer (including the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel 10 Pro Fold) and will bring a desktop windowing experience to the Pixel Tablet as well.

The feature is currently available in the Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2, with the possibility of being included in the final release later this year.
Apple is reportedly developing a new external monitor for Macs that can also function as a smart home display when not in use. The monitor may feature smart standby features powered by an onboard iOS chip, allowing it to independently handle smart features while idle. This would be an evolutionary step from Apple's current use of an A13 chip in its existing Studio Display. The release of the smart monitor is not expected until 2024 at the earliest.

This feature opens up possibilities for a dedicated desktop mode and could also bring USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode to older devices. With existing Android apps that work well with large screens, app support shouldn't be much of an issue.
