Population Shifts: Immigration Triples in Top Counties While Others Experience Losses.
Immigration nearly tripled in the top 20 most populous counties in the US from 2021 to 2022, with many newcomers drawn to big cities with more liberal immigration laws and longstanding immigrant enclaves. However, many of these counties are still losing residents to suburbs, exurbs, and other regions of the country, and the nation is feeling the brunt of the low birthrate. The pandemic still had an impact, with an unusually large majority of counties experiencing more deaths than births. Manhattan was an exception, adding 17,472 residents in 2022, after a loss of nearly 100,000 the previous year.
