Interior Drafts Secret 'Hub and Spoke' Plan to Centralize National Park Management
The Trump administration is planning a significant reorganization of the National Park Service (NPS) and other Interior Department bureaus, according to draft documents obtained by NOTUS. The plan proposes a 'hub and spoke' model where select 'hub' parks would centralize leadership and resource management for 'spoke' parks, replacing the current regional reporting structure. This move follows the loss of over 10,000 Interior employees and nearly a quarter of the NPS permanent workforce since 2025. While the administration frames the changes as efficiency measures, critics and former superintendents warn that the secrecy and centralization will erode local expertise, strain remaining staff, and jeopardize the unique needs of diverse park sites. The Interior Department has not yet notified Congress of the reorganization, as required by law, and implementation timelines remain fluid.
