Embattled Florida Democrat Resigns Congress, Pursues Reelection
Florida Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned from Congress ahead of an expulsion vote after the House Ethics Committee found she embezzled FEMA COVID-19 funds; she faces 15 DOJ charges, including theft and money laundering, with a potential sentence of up to 53 years, though she denies wrongdoing. Four days before resigning, she filed to run for reelection in Florida’s 20th District, in a Democratic primary field that includes Luther Campbell, Mark Douglas, Maisha Williams, Dale Holness, and Elijah Manley.
