Storm-Generated Seismic Imaging via Campus Fiber Optics
Penn State researchers modeled storm-generated seismic waves and used a campus fiber-optic cable as a seismometer to map four weak zones near a karst campus, validating the results with radar, boreholes, and independent seismic data; the work shows thunderstorms could provide a frequent, near-surface imaging source despite necessary modeling approximations.
