Brazilian Fishing Town Swallowed by Atlantic Ocean's Rise.
The fishing community of Atafona in Brazil is being engulfed by the Atlantic Ocean due to rising sea levels caused by climate change and the diversion of the Paraíba do Sul river's water to nearby cities, farms, and factories. The coastline is receding as much as 18 feet a year, and between 1984 and 2016, some 550 feet have disappeared, taking away buildings, livelihoods, and memories of the 7,000 people who call Atafona home.
