Taxi Driver at 50: Loneliness, Legacy and a City in Transition

At Tribeca’s Taxi Driver 50th anniversary event, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster and Paul Schrader reflected on the film’s enduring themes of isolation and its cinema-shaping legacy—from winning the Palme d’Or and earning four Oscar nominations to the iconic line “You talkin’ to me?”—while noting how its portrait of urban alienation remains relevant in today’s digital age and amid New York City’s transformation and evolving filmmaking realities.

James Franco kept a Cannes presence, joining Izabel Pakzad at the opening and premiering his action thriller Foster at the Cannes Market, which he called an old-fashioned L.A. movie and said he’s been focusing on a positive life after the controversy surrounding him. Franco Signals Studio Comeback With New Film and Positive Life Motto

James Franco says he has a role in a big-studio movie—the first blockbuster in nearly a decade—and notes at Cannes that it’s already shot but won’t be ready for this summer, with a release hoped for late 2026 or spring/summer 2027. The Disaster Artist (2017) was his last studio film; this year marks his fourth consecutive Cannes market presence, where he’s promoting the thriller Foster (which he helped rewrite and that is set in 1980s Los Angeles). Franco insists he’s been living a “positive life” and isn’t hiding, attending with partner Izabel Pakzad and planning to see as many films as possible while at Cannes.

Urgent Need to Rehome Dogs Due to Canine Flu Outbreak in Philadelphia and Oklahoma

The Animal Care and Control Team in Philadelphia is urgently seeking homes for at least 70 dogs after a canine flu outbreak at its Hunting Park location. The shelter needs to create a second temporary shelter to house dogs exposed to the flu for up to a month. The facility will be closed for dog intake on 24 and 25 April to allow for the dogs to be moved and the building to be cleaned. The shelter is seeking foster homes for large dogs for a month, and all adoption fees have been waived for dogs over 40 pounds until 23 April. Donations can be made online or mailed to ACCT Philly.
