Moiré graphene hosts a 7/3 fractional high-Chern insulator

Researchers report a moiré stack made from Bernal bilayer graphene and rhombohedral tetralayer graphene that hosts a family of quantum anomalous Hall states with Chern numbers from 1 to 7 at certain fillings, and, notably, a 7/3 fractional Chern insulator near 2/3 filling. The findings, supported by Hartree-Fock modeling and low-temperature transport measurements, expand lattice-based fractional quantum Hall physics without a magnetic field and establish this moiré platform as a route to exploring anyons.

Optical control writes and flips topological states in moiré MoTe2

Researchers demonstrate both optical training and direct optical switching of ferromagnetic polarization in twisted MoTe2 bilayers, enabling on-demand control of integer and fractional Chern insulator states via circularly polarized light and the writing of topological domains with potential for topological spintronics and quantum memories.
