
"Metal Atoms Form Unique Fullerene-Like Molecule"
A team of chemists from China and Chile has accidentally created a fullerene-like molecule made entirely of metal atoms. The molecule, composed of 20 antimony atoms, 12 gold atoms, and one potassium atom, was synthesized through a combination of high-temperature solid-phase synthesis and organometallic chemistry. While the molecule is unstable and not currently useful for practical applications, its unique bonding provides insights into metal bonding and could be valuable for future research in nanotechnology. The discovery opens the possibility of creating other interesting and potentially useful nanostructures using similar methods.
