Swanson's Return Prompts Cubs to DFA Arias and Shuffle Playoff Bench

With Dansby Swanson set to return Friday from an oblique injury, the Cubs are expected to DFA veteran infielder Gabriel Arias, a rarely-used waiver claim who hasn’t fit into the roster with Swanson back. B.J. Murray may remain with the major-league club, and the Cubs are poised to carry several position players for the playoff roster—Ramirez, Shaw, Kelly, Conforto, Tyrone Taylor—with Justin Dean eyed as a potential versatile bench option.

Guardians designate Arias as Angel Genao earns 40-man spot

The Cleveland Guardians designated infielder Gabriel Arias for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for top prospect Angel Genao. Arias, 26, has been a well-regarded prospect who never hit for average in the majors, posting a .219/.275/.359 line with a 77 wRC+ over 1,168 plate appearances since 2022, despite frequent playing time. With no options left, he will go through waivers; if unclaimed he can elect free agency, and if claimed, the new club would gain three additional years of control over him.

Cal Quantrill leads Guardians to series win over Twins.

Cal Quantrill pitched a no-hit bid through seven innings to lead the Cleveland Guardians to a 2-0 win over the Minnesota Twins. Despite allowing hard contact, Quantrill avoided damage and survived a three-walk inning to turn in his most impressive start of the season. Gabriel Arias showed off his absolute rocket of an arm at shortstop to turn a potential disaster into a brilliant win. The Guardians offense did little to put their rough days behind them, but Arias proved he deserves to stick around a little longer.
