Ancient Radio Burst Challenges Theories, Raises Earthquake Connection

Scientists have discovered a fast radio burst (FRB) called FRB 20220610A, which is the most distant and one of the brightest FRBs ever observed. It took around eight billion years for the signal to reach Earth, making it 50 percent older than the previous record holder. The FRB released the same amount of energy as our Sun does in 30 years in just a few milliseconds. Follow-up observations suggest that it originated from a pair or trio of merging galaxies. FRBs like this provide an opportunity for astronomers to estimate the mass of the universe and study the missing matter between galaxies. However, further observations and new FRB records will have to wait for better equipment, such as the Square Kilometer Array Observatory, which is planned to come online in 2028.
