High Chili Pepper Intake Linked to Increased GI Cancer Risk, Especially Esophagus

A meta-analysis of 14 observational studies involving over 11,000 participants found that high chili pepper consumption was associated with about a 64% higher risk of gastrointestinal cancers overall, with the strongest link for esophageal cancer (nearly a threefold increase). Regional differences were noted, and no causal relationship can be established due to the observational nature of the data; more research is needed to determine safe intake levels and underlying mechanisms.

Surge in Cancer Diagnoses Among Younger Adults, Particularly Gastrointestinal Cancers

Diagnoses of early-onset cancers, affecting people 50 and younger, have increased between 2010 and 2019, with gastrointestinal cancer showing the highest spike at 14.80%, followed by cancer of the endocrine system (8.69%) and breast cancer (7.7%). The rise in early-onset cancers is likely associated with factors such as obesity, changes in environmental exposures, sleep patterns, physical activity, and exposure to carcinogenic compounds. The study highlights the need to address preventable risk factors and prioritize an active lifestyle, healthy diet, and mental health to reduce the incidence of cancer in younger populations.
