A study published in The Lancet analyzed the factors that led to heart failure in the world's first successful transplant of a genetically modified pig heart into a human patient. The patient initially experienced strong cardiac function with no signs of acute rejection, but sudden heart failure led to his death two months after the surgery. The study identified several factors that likely contributed to the heart failure, including the patient's poor health prior to the transplant, the use of intravenous immunoglobulin, and the presence of a latent virus in the pig heart. The findings will inform future xenotransplantation procedures and improve the chances of long-term success.
