Pittman Absence Opens Door for Steelers' Rookie to Earn Rodgers' Trust

With Pittman Jr. out, Steelers rookie Germie Bernard has a rare chance to prove himself and win Aaron Rodgers’ trust, despite Rodgers’ cautious stance on rookies. Bernard flashed big-play potential in the preseason and could see more opportunities, especially if New England’s secondary is stressed by Carlton Davis III’s absence; how quickly he earns Rodgers’ trust and a bigger role may shape Pittsburgh’s depth down the stretch.

Weather Shortens Steelers Camp as Young Backs Impress

A weather evacuation cut Steelers practice in Latrobe, limiting looks at the club’s young playmakers. Roman Wilson flashed with a 45-yard strike from Aaron Rodgers, while Germie Bernard drew attention for an early 11-on-11 offsides. DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr did not practice. In the backfield, Dowdle and Lew Nichols stood out, with Nichols seemingly vying for the RB3 role and a potential heavy workload alongside Warren. Rookie tackle Max Iheanachor returned in a limited capacity, and Porter Jr., Jalen Ramsey, and Donte Kent remained on the PUP list but were seen nearby, suggesting gradual progress toward practicing.

The Steelers used 10 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft to shore up the offense and add versatility under new coach Mike McCarthy, with seven offensive selections. While the class shows high-end talent, anonymous NFL executives questioned several choices (Max Iheanachor, Riley Nowakowski, Eli Heidenreich) and the overall plan amid concerns about left-tackle stability with Broderick Jones’ neck issue and quarterback uncertainty, though Germie Bernard in the second round is praised as a good fit.

Instinctive Germie Bernard Could Be Steelers' Next Versatile Weapon

Germie Bernard, Alabama's versatile receiver praised as the most instinctive in this draft, is drawing comparisons to Emeka Egbuka for his well-rounded game—smart route-running, hands, and after-the-catch ability—rather than elite traits. Analyst Sam Monson says Bernard could be the type who plays fast and productive without one standout elite skill, which could suit the Steelers as he learns behind veterans. Bernard posted 82 touches for 963 yards and 9 TDs at Alabama, illustrating a high-IQ, alpha-like role that Pittsburgh could leverage in its offense.

Steelers Could Jump Ravens to Land Germie Bernard in Day 2 Mock

In a PFF second-round mock, the Steelers are shown trading up from 21 to 44 to draft Alabama WR Germie Bernard, one pick ahead of the Ravens, after previously liking Max Iheanachor. Bernard would bring strong after-the-catch ability and route savvy to pair with DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr.; with several other WRs still available, Pittsburgh would likely need to move up to secure him, using its three third-round picks and two fourth-rounders to make a deal if they deem him worth it.
