Canada will buy six Saab GlobalEye early-warning aircraft (based on Bombardier Global 6500) over Boeing’s E-7 Wedgetail, aiming to reduce reliance on US defense suppliers. Saab pledges Canadian R&D investment, underscoring closer Canada–Sweden ties and Arctic defense autonomy, while Ottawa continues its F-35 program with Lockheed Martin.
NATO’s procurement arm reportedly chose Saab and Canada's Bombardier to replace Boeing's E-3A Sentry with Saab-Bombardier's GlobalEye, potentially making this the first non-Boeing common airborne-surveillance backbone since 1982 if formalized. The plan targets 10–12 aircraft at about €550 million each (over €5 billion including sustainment), with France already signing for two and interest from Germany, Poland, and Canada; a contract has not yet been signed.
Poland is in talks with Sweden to purchase an undisclosed number of early-warning aircraft for the Polish Air Force. The Polish government is reportedly interested in Saab's GlobalEye aircraft, which were also ordered by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration last year. The aircraft will be fitted with the Erieye Extended Range radar, which has a range of more than 550 km. The announcement was made during the Northern Group meeting, where members agreed to provide further military assistance to Ukraine in its struggle against Russia's aggression.
