AI Demand Drives Up Used GPU Values Amid 2026 Memory Shortage

The 2026 memory shortage, dubbed 'RAMaggedon,' has significantly increased the resale value of used graphics cards. NVIDIA RTX 50-series prices have risen by up to 39 percent, with further hikes expected. High-VRAM models, such as the RTX 3090, remain valuable for local AI setups. Sellers can expect to retain 40 to 60 percent of original value for cards with substantial memory, though peer-to-peer sales yield higher returns than trade-in programs.

Q1 2023 Sees Record Low Sales for Desktop GPUs

The desktop GPU market continued to decline in Q1 2023, with unit shipments of new add-in-boards (AIB) dropping 12.6% from the previous quarter and 38.2% compared to Q1 2022, according to Jon Peddie Research. The downturn is attributed to consumers no longer rushing to upgrade their hardware, layoffs, and anxiety over inflation. However, a slow recovery could start in H2 2023, depending on recently-released mainstream GPUs from AMD and Nvidia. Despite the sales slump, the market share between the three GPU competitors changed little from the preceding quarter, with Team Green retaining a dominant 84%.
