FBI Investigates Surge of Racist Texts Targeting Minority Communities
The FBI has expanded its investigation into racist and threatening text messages initially reported in Black communities to include Hispanic and LGBTQ+ communities, as well as high school students. These messages, which vary in language, include references to slavery and deportation threats. The FBI is working with the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division to evaluate these incidents, although no violent acts have been reported. The Southern Poverty Law Center and NAACP have condemned the messages, linking them to the emboldening of hate speech during President-elect Trump's campaign.
