Unaware of Sepsis, CT Woman's Near-Death Experience

A Connecticut woman, Erika Collins, who had never heard of sepsis, nearly died from the disease after it entered her bone following shoulder surgery. Sepsis, triggered by an infection, can lead to organ failure and death. In 2021, sepsis killed 574 people in Connecticut. Factors contributing to the increasing problem of sepsis include more infections from pandemics like COVID-19, weakened immune systems in cancer patients and older adults, and health care-acquired infections. People of color and low-income individuals are disproportionately affected. Early recognition and treatment with antibiotics are crucial in improving outcomes, and efforts are being made to reduce sepsis-related morbidity and mortality in hospitals.
