Hughes Files Chapter 11 as Starlink Upends GEO Broadband Market
EchoStar’s Hughes geostationary satellite broadband unit filed for Chapter 11 to restructure about $1.5 billion of debt as it loses ground to SpaceX’s Starlink and pivots toward enterprise, government and defense work; consumer subscribers have fallen about 21.7% year over year to roughly 641,000, and Hughes notes the LEO competition is structural while continuing to provide service during the restructuring and excluding international subsidiaries from the filing.
