Spaceborne sentinels read animal panic to fight poaching
A new wildlife-tracking satellite system called Icarus, backed by the EU, aims to monitor animal movement and behavioural panic from space to alert rangers in real time, helping combat poaching of rhinos, elephants and other wildlife. Tested in Namibia’s Okambara and Kruger National Park, the project envisions tagging tens of thousands of animals and expanding into a global network dubbed the Internet of Animals to provide live alerts, though real-time data transmission remains technically challenging.
