Ballpoint Ink in Martian Meteorites Highlights Contamination Challenge

A Basque Country team analyzed six Martian meteorite slices and found traces of ballpoint-pen ink and other contaminants tied to sample processing, not Martian material. Using Raman spectroscopy, they identified seven contaminants, including a copper compound, printer-ink molecules, and blue polyester, across samples with and without prior processing. While analytic methods can distinguish these contaminants, the study underscores the lack of standardized, contamination-aware prep protocols and proposes steps to minimize leftovers as future Mars sample-return missions proceed.

HP Introduces Monthly Printer Rental Subscription Plan

HP has introduced the HP All-In Plan, a printer rental subscription program aimed at addressing the frustrations of owning and maintaining a printer. The program offers a new printer, ink, and 24/7 support, with the option to upgrade after two years. However, the subscription starts at $6.99 per month with a limit of 20 pages, and additional pages incur extra costs. Subscribers are locked into a two-year commitment, and early cancellation fees apply. This move comes after HP's acknowledgment of customer frustrations and amidst class-action lawsuits over ink cartridge restrictions.

"HP Faces Backlash Over Printer DRM and Ecolabels"

The International Imaging Technology Council (IITC) has called for the General Electronics Council (GEC) to revoke at least 101 HP printer models from the EPEAT registry, which HP has "made a mockery of." The IITC claims that HP's Dynamic Security and HP+ features prevent customers from using third-party ink cartridges, which goes against EPEAT requirements. The IITC previously filed a complaint to the GEC about HP in 2019 for firmware blocking non-HP ink, but there didn't seem to be any noticeable results.
