Unveiling the Origins of Neural Synchrony in Social Interactions
Neuroscientists have discovered that when individuals observe the natural behavior of someone they know well, their brain activity starts to synchronize with theirs. This phenomenon, known as interpersonal neural synchrony (INS), plays a crucial role in successful social interactions. The study found that INS emerges spontaneously when individuals can see each other, and specific behaviors such as eye contact, body movement, and smiling contribute to the synchronization of both behavior and brain activity. The findings suggest that INS is a fundamental property of social interaction and may be contagious and spread interpersonally through behavioral cues. However, it remains unclear if the same synchronization occurs between unfamiliar individuals.
