Unleashing "The Octopus" Molecules: A Breakthrough for Nuclear Waste Disposal
Researchers from the University of Houston have developed molecular crystals capable of capturing iodine, a common radioactive fission product found in nuclear waste. These crystals, based on cyclotetrabenzil hydrazones, offer high iodine uptake capacity and can prevent iodine from damaging nuclear reactor coatings and waste containment vessels. The crystals can be reused and have the potential to be a cost-effective solution for nuclear waste management. Additionally, they have applications in capturing carbon dioxide and could contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable world.
