Researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, TU Darmstadt, and Wuhan University have developed a new method of writing in water using an ion-exchange bead as a pen. The bead, which is made of ion-exchange material, alters the local pH value of the water as it rolls across the surface, attracting ink particles and leaving behind a fine line. This innovative technique allows for writing in water without the need for a solid substrate, opening up possibilities for complex density patterns and 3D structuring of fluids. The researchers believe this approach has the potential for extreme modularity and can be developed in various ways.
