International Coalition Formed to Protect Red Sea Shipping from Iranian Proxy Attacks
The United States is considering the establishment of a naval task force, in collaboration with its allies, to protect ships traveling through the Red Sea following recent attacks on commercial vessels by Iranian-sponsored proxy forces. The attacks, carried out by the Houthi militia in Yemen, are seen as an extension of Israel's conflict with Hamas. President Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, compared the proposed task force to those operating in the Gulf and off the coast of Somalia. The U.S. intends to take appropriate action in consultation with allies to address the escalating aggression.
