The San Jose Sharks dominated the Anaheim Ducks 10-0 in a preseason exhibition, with rookie Ivar Stenberg scoring a hat trick and adding an assist. The Sharks’ offensive core, including Will Smith and Michael Misa, performed efficiently, while the Ducks struggled defensively. This performance reinforces Stenberg’s status as a top contender for the Calder Trophy, despite being a preseason game.
The San Jose Sharks are hosting the Vegas Golden Knights in their second preseason game, featuring the NHL debut of top draft pick Ivar Stenberg. Coach Ryan Warsofsky is testing potential opening night lines, including a new pairing of Stenberg, Wennberg, and Graf. While the Sharks lost their first exhibition 6-2 to Anaheim, they are now fielding a more NHL-caliber roster to evaluate depth at center and defense ahead of the regular season.
San Jose signed 18-year-old forward Ivar Stenberg, the No. 2 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, to a three-year entry-level contract after a breakout SHL season with Frolunda (33 points in 43 games), the most by an 18-year-old in SHL since the Sedin brothers. Stenberg just finished development camp and scored in the Prospect Scrimmage; he’ll join his first NHL training camp in September and may participate in the 2026 Rookie Faceoff. The Sharks continue their practice of housing young players with current or former Sharks to help them acclimate, with potential housing arranged through Alexander Wennberg.
The Sharks signed 2026 No. 2 overall pick Ivar Stenberg to an entry-level contract and expect him to push for a top-nine role next season; development camp impressed with his speed and hockey sense, and Sharks officials say there’s a learning curve ahead. Stenberg will train in Gothenburg, is excited to play with Macklin Celebrini, and can play both wings (preferring left).
The San Jose Sharks used this weekend’s NHL Draft to jump-start their rebuild, grabbing high-upside winger Ivar Stenberg at No. 2, trading William Eklund to the Senators, adding a solid blue-line piece in Keaton Verhoeff, and taking a 7-foot-1 project, Alexander Karmanov, with the 201st pick, all while Macklin Celebrini’s strong showing remains a beacon of hope for the franchise.
San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier walked away from the 2026 NHL Draft's first round with three picks—Ivar Stenberg at No. 2, Keaton Verhoeff at No. 9 and Ryan Lin at No. 21—seen as future-building blocks rather than immediate fixes to the blue line. Stenberg is hailed as a complete, high-upside winger; Verhoeff and Lin are strong defensive prospects who could contribute down the road. The Sharks reportedly explored a deal for an established defenseman (including discussions involving William Eklund) but did not pull the trigger, choosing the best-player-available approach and aiming to bolster their depth for tomorrow.
With three first-round picks in the 2026 Draft, the Sharks are prioritizing defense. Insiders say Ivar Stenberg is a near-lock to go No. 2 and Daxon Rudolph is the top target for No. 9, though Keaton Verhoeff could slip into play if the top D prospects go early. Other ranked defensemen in consideration include Gavin McKenna, Chase Reid, Caleb Malhotra, Carson Carels, and Alberts Smits. San Jose could stay at No. 9 or maneuver up using 2 and 27 (plus future picks) since elite defensemen are scarce on the market.
Corey Pronman's final first‑round projection for the 2026 NHL Draft keeps Gavin McKenna at No. 1 to Toronto, with Ivar Stenberg likely at No. 2 to San Jose, and a mix of forwards and defensemen filling the rest of the top 15. The piece outlines potential picks (e.g., Chase Reid, Caleb Malhotra) and notes how trades and team needs—along with recent moves like the Bowen Byram deal—could drive early shifts on draft night.
After the NHL Draft Lottery dropped the Chicago Blackhawks to No. 4, attention shifts from forwards to defense as Ivar Stenberg remains a viable target if Chicago moves up. With Toronto expected to take Gavin McKenna at No. 1, the Sharks at No. 2 face a choice between adding high-end defense or more forward talent, keeping Stenberg in play and making a potential swap appealing; Vancouver at No. 3 could go for Caleb Malhotra, depending on how the board falls. A bold Blackhawks trade up—offering the fourth pick plus extra seconds—could signal a serious push to accelerate their rebuild.
Toronto won the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery to secure the No. 1 overall pick, with two top prospects—Gavin McKenna of Penn State and Ivar Stenberg of SHL standout—front and center as options; the Sharks hold No. 2 and the Canucks No. 3, and the draft will be held in Buffalo on June 26-27.
The Chicago Blackhawks enter the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery with a 13.5% chance to win the first pick and a 41.7% chance to land No. 4, keeping their streak of top-four selections alive while weighing Gavin McKenna vs. Ivar Stenberg for the No. 1 slot and considering trades if they land third or fourth; GM Kyle Davidson also has multiple second-round picks to leverage for strengthening the prospect pool and defense.
Scott Wheeler’s May 2026 NHL Draft ranking places Gavin McKenna and Ivar Stenberg at Nos. 1–2 in a 64-prospect list (plus honorable mentions), outlining six tiers and detailed reports on each player’s strengths and development notes as he builds toward his final Top 100 in June.
