Root's 14,000th milestone keeps England fighting at The Oval
England finished day four at 182-5, 281 runs short of a world-record 463 target, with Joe Root unbeaten on 75 and a 97-run stand with Harry Brook giving them hope as New Zealand set the stage for a decisive final day. Root became only the second player to reach 14,000 Test runs, while Stokes was absent on duty and Brook contributed 58 in support. New Zealand had earlier posted 391 (Phillips 100) and 362 (Nicholls 121, Ravindra 76, Mitchell 68).
