Giants GM Joe Schoen has completed the bulk of the team’s roster construction for now, pairing a young quarterback on a rookie deal with Malik Nabers as the top receiver and a strong, mostly returning offensive line, while questions linger about interior run defense, a true No. 1 corner, and receiver depth. He won’t speak publicly again until the early November bye week as the team heads into the season with high expectations.
Breer’s May takeaways center on the Giants extending GM Joe Schoen to better align with John Harbaugh, creating stability as the new era takes shape, while also passing along updates such as Matthew Stafford’s updated Rams contract, Rashee Rice’s off-field concerns for the Chiefs, plus notes on the NFL’s Accelerator Program, Lions’ Campbell and Linderbaum option decisions, a CBA nuance about international games, and several quick-hit items on locker-room dynamics and June 1 cap rules.
The New York Giants announced a multi-year extension for general manager Joe Schoen, keeping him in place as head coach John Harbaugh reshapes the organization’s leadership. Harbaugh’s arrival has altered the reporting structure—moving the coach and GM to report to ownership rather than to each other—and Schoen’s adaptability helped secure his future in New York.
The New York Giants’ 2026 draft, the first under head coach John Harbaugh and GM Joe Schoen, aims to reset expectations with a balanced, high-ceiling class. Key picks include Arvell Reese (A) at outside linebacker, Sisi Mauigoa (A) as a versatile interior lineman, Colton Hood (A) at corner, Malachi Fields (B+) as a big-bodied wide receiver, plus depth pieces Bobby Jamison-Travis (C+), J.C. Davis (B) and Jack Kelly (B). The team traded up for Fields and cited medical confidence around Mauigoa’s back issue, framing the class as a culture-shifting move for Dart and the franchise.
Analyzing how the Giants could structure a two-pick haul in the 2026 NFL Draft, this piece ranks the best possible combinations after landing a second top-10 selection, while revisiting Joe Schoen’s past double-top-10 decision (selecting Kayvon Thibodeaux over a high‑graded tackle duo) and weighing which positions and prospects would maximize value.
The Giants’ new regime of Jim Harbaugh and Joe Schoen is tearing down silos between analytics, scouting and coaching to build a cohesive operation, using the scars from last year as motivation and pursuing an aggressive, all-in approach to the draft and roster moves to accelerate a sustainable rebuild.
New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen said teams have inquired about moving up to the No. 5 pick in the NFL draft, but he won’t consider trades until he’s on the clock and his preferred player is still available; if that player isn’t there, he may explore moving down.
Negotiations between the New York Giants and nose tackle Dexter Lawrence have stalled as Lawrence seeks more guaranteed money and has requested a trade. Giants GM Joe Schoen said talks have been productive but no resolution is imminent, and looming around the April 23 NFL Draft any potential deal could involve 2026 draft picks (and possibly a player). Lawrence, 28, is two years into a four-year, $90 million extension and has skipped voluntary offseason workouts, complicating the team’s planning as they weigh keeping a cornerstone defender versus capital to address roster needs.
The Giants may struggle to trade down from No. 5 in the 2026 NFL Draft because many top prospects aren’t at premium positions and there’s no clear, elite quarterback; choices like Jeremiyah Love (RB), Sonny Styles (LB) or Caleb Downs (S) would carry different value than a wideout such as Carnell Tate, and any trade would hinge on gaining an extra second or third-round pick, which is complicated by the Giants’ seven picks and the absence of a third- or seventh-rounder. GM Joe Schoen says they’ll move back only if it adds real value; otherwise they’ll take the best conviction pick, whether it’s a defensive upgrade with Styles/Downs or an offensive weapon in Love, though Love’s role would be shaped by a run-focused offense and an already stocked RB room. The ultimate outcome remains uncertain for 2026.
This Giants mailbag centers on Dexter Lawrence’s contract standstill and a possible trade, with Ed arguing the smarter move is a lucrative extension given his two-year deal and zero guaranteed money, despite cap considerations; the piece also touches draft questions (Love/Skattebo, Tracy), Harbaugh’s influence, and recent Giants ownership-shift details.
New York Giants players gave GM Joe Schoen a D+ in this year’s NFLPA report cards, the lowest among GMs, signaling deep concerns about his negotiation style, roster decisions, and draft results. With the team winning only seven games in the past two seasons and multiple positional needs, the piece argues ownership should heed the players’ assessment rather than ignore it or fight narratives, underscoring a potential rift between front office decisions and the locker room.
Giants GM Joe Schoen insisted at the Scouting Combine that his responsibility for leading football operations remains unchanged, even as John Harbaugh’s increased ownership-level influence and Dawn Aponte’s strategic role reshape the team’s leadership dynamic.
Giants GM Joe Schoen downplayed the notion that head coach John Harbaugh would have the final say on football decisions, saying the final say is just a paper arrangement and emphasizing collaboration and a shared process to reach the best decisions for the Giants.
John Harbaugh downplayed the significance of the reporting line to Giants ownership, saying the real key is effective collaboration among him, GM Joe Schoen, and owner John Mara as negotiations wrap up and the team plans for 2026.
The New York Giants have hired John Harbaugh as head coach to partner with GM Joe Schoen, creating a new leadership dynamic after Harbaugh’s Ravens departure. The two quickly connected, with Schoen already fortifying the quarterback situation by trading back into the first round to select Jaxson Dart, signaling a collaborative approach to rebuilding the team around a unified coaching-front office strategy.
