Canadian GC contender Derek Gee-West was involved in a massive crash on Giro d'Italia Stage 2, forced into a long solo chase as the race was briefly neutralised. He gradually rejoined the main group and finished with losses of just over a minute, with the peloton re-firing after the chaos and his team assessing him for a full medical check-up ahead of Stage 3.
Mads Pedersen of Lidl-Trek won the Gent-Wevelgem race after a head-to-head battle with world champion Mathieu van der Poel. Pedersen's team had raced aggressively, but in the end, he had to face Van der Poel alone. Pedersen set the tempo on the final climb to dissuade Van der Poel from attacking and then worked together with him to stay ahead of the peloton. In the final sprint, Pedersen held off Van der Poel to claim victory, positioning himself as a favorite for the upcoming Tour of Flanders.
Mattias Skjelmose of Lidl-Trek won the second edition of the Maryland Cycling Classic in Baltimore, taking a solo victory with over two minutes on the chase group. Skjelmose attacked from a five-rider front group and crossed the finish line in dominant fashion. Neilson Powless finished second, followed by Hugo Houle in third place.
