Porterville eviction shooting claims deputy’s life
A Tulare County Sheriff's Office detective, Randy Hoppert, was fatally shot while serving an eviction notice at a Porterville home. The 60-year-old suspect barricaded inside and was later killed after a lengthy, multi-agency response that included SWAT and crisis negotiators. Authorities evacuated nearby blocks and secured area schools as the investigation continued. Hoppert, a Navy veteran who joined the sheriff’s office in 2020, leaves behind a pregnant wife; this marks the sheriff’s office’s first line-of-duty death since 2007.
