"Surgeons Extract Live Parasitic Worms from Elderly Man's Abdomen in Shocking Procedure"
During a routine surgery to remove a tumor for colon cancer treatment, doctors in China unexpectedly discovered five live parasitic worms, identified as Clonorchis sinensis or liver flukes, in a 70-year-old man's biliary tract. The worms were removed, and the patient was prescribed antiparasitic drugs and began chemotherapy for his cancer. Clonorchis sinensis is commonly contracted by eating raw or undercooked freshwater fish and can cause serious health issues if left untreated. The case was published in the New England Journal of Medicine on December 28.
