Spring Underfoot, Winter Above: Mars’ Thin Air Creates Divergent Temperatures
On Mars, the ground under a sunlit patch can reach about 24°C at noon near the equator while the surrounding air stays well below freezing due to the atmosphere’s extreme thinness. MEDA measurements on Perseverance show a steep near-surface temperature gradient (roughly 26°C per metre) and a decoupling between ground and air that depends on surface material, slope, and season. This means there is no single Martian noon temperature; a warm ground does not imply a warm sky. For explorers, such an environment requires thermal control and a pressurized suit rather than relying on ambient temperatures.
