Individuals with high depression scores exhibit increased brain activity in frontal brain regions during visuospatial memory tasks, despite similar behavioral performance compared to those with low depression scores. Depression can impact cognitive abilities and lead to structural and functional changes in the brain. The study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure brain responses and found that the high depression group showed increased activation in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The findings suggest that individuals with depression may make compensatory efforts to achieve the same performance as those without depression. However, the lack of an official clinical diagnosis in the high depression group and the low difficulty of the memory task are limitations of the study.
