Hebrew University researchers show that when people focus on a visual task, their brain actively suppresses negative spoken words before conscious awareness, making neutral words more likely to be noticed; the effect persists across varying task difficulty and suggests an automatic gatekeeper that protects cognitive resources, with potential implications for anxiety disorders, phobias, and PTSD as future research investigates clinical differences.
