Spanish studio MercurySteam, known for Metroid Dread and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, announced a workforce adjustment with an unspecified number of layoffs and pledged to handle the process with care; the move follows Blades of Fire (2025), which underperformed commercially despite decent reviews, and amid prior crunch allegations that staff deny. The company says it will support affected employees and help them find new opportunities as it refocuses its efforts.
MercurySteam co-founder Enric Álvarez dismissed reports of a chaotic development process for Metroid Dread, highlighting the game's critical acclaim and commercial success as evidence of the team's efficiency. Álvarez also praised the experience of working closely with Nintendo, describing it as "heaven" and a "game-changing" opportunity. While Álvarez did not provide any hints about future Metroid projects, he confirmed that José Luis Márquez, the game director for Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Dread, is still with the studio.
