NASA's Psyche Mission: Exploring the Metallic Characteristics of Asteroid Psyche
New research using NASA's retired Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) telescope has provided insights into the metallic characteristics of asteroid Psyche. The observations from SOFIA, the first to gather data from every part of the asteroid's surface, suggest that Psyche is likely a metallic body, aligning with scientists' expectations. The data also indicates surface variations in composition, with the north pole showing different characteristics compared to the south pole. Scientists theorize that the surface differences could be due to material ejected from collisions elsewhere on the asteroid. The Psyche mission, set to launch in October 2023, aims to study the asteroid up close and learn more about its unique planetary body, potentially shedding light on planet formation and the interiors of Earth and Mars.
