A tropical storm may form along the U.S. coast in coming days, with a less than 40% chance near the Gulf Coast; AccuWeather and the National Weather Service warn the Midlands could see thunderstorms, strong winds, and possible flash flooding this weekend (July 18–21). Heavy rain may provide drought relief, but heat indices could approach 105°F, and forecasts remain uncertain with updates expected as conditions evolve.
A 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Midlands region of South Carolina on Friday afternoon, approximately 5 miles southeast of Elgin in Kershaw County. The earthquake, occurring about 1.2 miles underground, adds to the more than 80 earthquakes recorded in the area over the past two years.
The Midlands in South Carolina will be hosting various events and celebrations leading up to the Fourth of July. Some notable events include the 4th of July Fireworks at Fort Jackson, the Lake Murray 4th of July Boat Parade and Fireworks, the Town of Irmo Independence Day Laser Show, the 8th Annual Patriots, Picnic & Pops, and Fireworks with the Phil 2023 at Segra Park. Additionally, the Lexington County Peach Festival will feature a car show, arts and crafts vendors, live entertainment, a parade, and fireworks.
