Southwest to exit O'Hare, refocus on Chicago Midway

Midway Airport in Chicago was saved from extinction in the 1960s and '70s by Midway Airlines, which employed a daring formula of secondhand aircraft and discounted fares. The airport's decline had a contagious effect on neighbors, and Midway Airlines' success precipitated its downfall as other carriers mimicked its cut-rate model. In 1990, Midway lost $139 million and declared bankruptcy in March 1991. Acquisition by another carrier seemed the only way out of its death spiral, but the deal with Northwest fell through, and Midway Airlines shut down on Nov. 13, 1991.
