AI-Driven 10,000-Agent System Claims Navier-Stokes Breakthrough in 88 Hours

OpenAI announced it used a system of about 10,000 coordinating agents powered by its internal AI model to purportedly solve the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem in roughly 88 hours. The process involved agents reading cached internet data and running code, with groups of agents communicating within their teams. NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster questioned the route and whether OpenAI models had access to collaborators’ data, noting a similar line of work with OpenAI competitor Anthropic. OpenAI stated that no specific user data was accessed to solve the problem, though de-identified usage data could have indirectly aided model training. The Clay Mathematics Institute has not commented on the claimed solution.
