Padres Prospect Pleads Guilty in Immigrant-Transport Case
Padres pitching prospect Humberto Cruz, 19, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for taking money to transport undocumented immigrants; arrested near Lukeville, AZ, he acknowledged that deportation was virtually certain as a non‑citizen and that his work visa could be revoked for up to 10 years. Cruz was sentenced to 30 days in prison with credit for time served and is back in Mexico; the Padres placed him on the restricted list and declined further comment, and prosecutors had initially charged a felony before the plea.
