"Russian Data Gap: A Warning for Arctic Climate Research"
The loss of scientific data from Russia's Arctic monitoring stations following the invasion of Ukraine has exacerbated information gaps, impacting the tracking and prediction of global climate change. This has led to a biased view on Arctic change, with potential global consequences such as underestimation of biomass, soil organic carbon, permafrost thawing, shifts in biodiversity, and greenhouse gas emissions. The logistical challenges of monitoring the vast and inhospitable Arctic region, as well as problems with voluntary data sharing, have further complicated the situation. Efforts to address this include the suggestion of a United Nations system to ensure continuous monitoring of key climate metrics.
