During NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission, a spacecraft successfully pushed the moonlet Dimorphos off its orbit, but it also caused unintended consequences. Scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles, discovered that the impact resulted in the release of 37 boulders, some as large as 22 feet wide, which scattered off the moonlet's surface. These boulders, traveling at high speeds, could potentially cause significant damage if they were to collide with Earth.
