Obama's Key Role in Dems' Redistricting Push
Former President Barack Obama hosted a fundraiser for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), raising $1.5 million ahead of crucial redistricting fights that will determine the House majority next year. The NDRC, led by Eric Holder, aims to combat gerrymandering and reshape congressional districts. Obama emphasized the need to remain vigilant and not become complacent, as the battle over state lines continues even after initial maps are drawn. The NDRC projects that five states could see new maps by the end of this year, potentially tipping control of the House. Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, and New York are among the states where redistricting battles are ongoing. Republicans in North Carolina will also have the opportunity to redraw congressional districts, potentially erasing gains made by increased Black representation in other Southern states. Overall, as many as 27 congressional districts across 13 states could be reshaped ahead of the 2024 elections.
