The Impact of Neighborhood Stressors on Pregnancy Hormones
Pregnant women living in neighborhoods with high levels of stressors, such as vacant lots and derelict buildings, have significantly higher levels of testosterone, which can disrupt hormone regulation and lead to complications during and after childbirth, according to a study by Rutgers University. The research suggests that interventions to reduce neighborhood stress, such as improving access to green spaces and community resources, could improve pregnancy outcomes. Neighborhood stressors have been associated with preterm birth, low birth weight, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and stillbirth. The study analyzed data from 262 pregnant women and found that testosterone levels were nearly 40% higher in women living in neighborhoods with stressors compared to those in well-ordered neighborhoods.
