Belmont Park Reopens with $455M Overhaul, Smaller Grandstand, and Year-Round Racing
Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., reopens for racing on Sept. 18 after a three-year, $455 million reconstruction. The new facility features a 300,000-square-foot grandstand with a daily capacity of 10,000, down from 1.25 million square feet previously. The renovation includes a new 1-mile Tapeta synthetic track for winter racing, replacing the closed Aqueduct Racetrack, and two widened turf courses with advanced drainage. The opening day features the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, headlined by Japanese champion Forever Young. While the first two floors are open, luxury suites and upper levels remain under construction, with a full grand opening expected in spring 2027 ahead of the return of the Belmont Stakes.
