Germany fights toxic caterpillar outbreak as Berlin parks close
Germany is grappling with an aggressive outbreak of oak processionary moth caterpillars whose toxic hairs can trigger rashes, breathing difficulties, and even anaphylactic shock. Berlin has been hit hardest, with parks closed and nests removed by hazmat teams using asbestos-grade vacuums, while residents are told to wash clothes after park visits and keep windows shut. Climate-related heat and drought are believed to drive the spread, and authorities say eradicating the caterpillars is unlikely, so the aim is damage limitation.
