Indonesia Demolishes Luxury Prison Compound After Ombudsman Unveils VIP Amenities
Indonesia has demolished a controversial luxury housing compound at the Cibinong prison in Bogor, near Jakarta, following a surprise inspection by the national Ombudsman on September 23. Investigators discovered more than 10 apartment-style units equipped with air conditioning, large-screen televisions, refrigerators, sofas, and dining areas, along with a gym and a golf simulator under construction. While prison officials initially claimed the facilities were for staff, the Ombudsman found inmates inside the complex. In response to public outcry and the investigation, the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections suspended five officials, including the prison warden, on September 30. The incident has intensified scrutiny of Indonesia’s corrections system, which has long faced allegations that wealthy or well-connected inmates can purchase preferential treatment through bribery.
